Problem solved

I used body filler to line the doors up with the front fender/guard on both the left side and the right side. Looks pretty damn straight so im very happy. Not sure if im going to attempt to muck around with the boot. Might buy a new one and see if it fits better.

Problems so far

Ive run to some problems with the panels lining up. Not sure how im going to fix these issues, or even if they are even able to be fixed.

some parts are perfect, but some parts are out

The Doors, Quarters and Fenders

I had to replace the doors because they were rusted down the bottom again. I decided to buy door skins because the actual door itself was in pretty good condition. To get the skins off the door i used a grinder to slowly grind the old skins off the door and then simply replaced them with the new skins. The doors on both sides were then put back on the car so the quarter panels could be lined up, positioned and then welded. The fenders were also put on and the car so that both ends of the door lined up properly. I also used body filler to fill in the cut from the quarter panel to the roof. You can see the body filler in the photos. Im not sure if body filler was a great idea, but i dont have the skills nor the equipment to solder the panels. It seemed to work quite well though.

Rear Quarters

Both the left and right side rear quarter panels were rusted through at the bottom. The outer wheelhouses were also completely rusted and needed to be replaced. I cut out the original quarters and drilled out all the spot welds until the quarter panel was completely removed. I then did the same with the outer wheelhouses. The trunk floor drop off were also cut and replaced with new sheet metal. The black panels are all new sheet metal. The drop off was painted red by me for no reason.

The Floor

So it was time to get down to work. i started on the floor because obviously it needed a complete replacement. I decided to buy the full floor left hand side and right hand side. After both sides were cut out, i slotted the pans into place and welded them to the body.

I started on the right side, completed the welds, then cut out the left side and completed that. I did this so that i wasnt at risk of any warping. The floor now looks like this…..

The Red Mustang

This is what the car looked like the day after i got it. i had to change the wheels because when it arrived, the wheels were busted and i couldnt roll it into the garage to work on

The Project

Finally started a blog of my adventures rebuilding a 1966 hardtop c code mustang coupe. This is a restomod rebuild and was started in July 2011. The mustang was purchased and shipped from California to Melbourne and has its original 289 engine which will also be rebuilt. My experience with cars is zero, so this is the first attempt at a restomod.
